BIO
Dr. Behara Satyanarayana (Satyam) is currently working as Associate Professor at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) since 2013. He started his research career as a Mangrove Biologist in India and obtained his Ph.D. from the Andhra University (2005). With his passionate research in mangrove ecology, vegetation dynamics, habitat restoration, conservation and management, along with Remote Sensing & GIS data applications, Dr. Satyam started exploring the mangrove wetlands in different Asian and African countries like India, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, Cameroon, and The Gambia. At present, Dr. Satyam and his team are leading the Mangrove Research Unit (MARU) at the INOS and working on various scientific tasks of the mangrove social-ecological systems. MARU is indeed one of the leading scientific groups in the country working on mangrove ecosystems and emerging as a Best Reference Centre for mangrove studies in Malaysia.
Dr. Satyam had a long-standing academic association with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the University Libre Brussels (ULB) in Belgium (since 1995). He was instrumental for developing academic/research collaboration between the ULB and the UMT through an MOU (2011). He is still affiliated to the ULB as a Potential Scientific Collaborator (2010 – present). Dr. Satyam is also managing the Erasmus Mundus excellence labelled ‘Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems’ (TROPIMUNDO) Master programme as a Local Coordinator for the UMT (2014 – present). He is part of the Steering board as well as the Selection committee of the TROPIMUNDO. His involvement as a member of the IUCN Mangrove Specialist Group (MSG) (since 2019) opened the doors to work with other eminent (mangrove) scientists around the world and raised opportunities for further National/International networking, research grants acquisition, students’ mobility, joint supervision, and peer-reviewed publications.
With a professional experience over 25 years, Dr. Satyam’s academic accomplishments were recognized through several National/International scientific awards, 15 Research grants, and 93 Peer-reviewed publications. The holistic contributions of Dr. Behara Satyanarayana have been recognized by the UMT and honored him with a Best International Staff Award in 2019 and Excellent Service Award in 2022.
