Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saifullah Arifin Jaaman received his Bachelor Degree in Fisheries Science from the University of Agriculture Malaysia (UPM), Master of Science in Marine and Fisheries Science and his Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom. He is a qualified Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) and a certified Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia EIA Subject Consultant on Marine Mammal.
Dr. Saifullah has been involved in marine endangered species conservation work, particularly on dugongs and coastal cetaceans, for many Malaysian projects since 1996. The projects have included surveys and EIA/EMP consultations on the population ecology of dugongs, whales, dolphins, whale shark and their by-catch in fisheries. He is a research grant recipient from the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MOSTI) and Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia. During the last 16 years he has been involved in similar work for the Sarawak State Government to study marine mammals and to setup a Marine Protected Area (MPA) for the conservation of marine endangered species and their habitats in Lawas. He has also performed MMO duties on several oil and gas operations in the South China Sea.
Dr. Saifullah has presented papers at international conferences in Europe and Asia and has published a monograph (i.e., Marine Mammals in East Malaysia: Distribution and Interactions with Fisheries) and more than 20 articles on marine mammals in Malaysia.
Dr. Saifullah is currently the Head of Marine Endangered Species (MES) Program, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The Marine Endangered Species (MES) Program is a collaborative research effort between UMT, FIO (China), UM, UMS and DOF in studying the population ecology and behaviour of cetaceans, dugong, and sea turtles, and human-animal interactions in Malaysia. His responsibilities include planning, conducting and reviewing MES research efforts in Malaysian waters.
He is the Technical Advisor to the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network and UNEP/GEF Project on The Conservation of Dugongs and Their Habitats in Malaysia. He is also the Co-Chairman of the IOC/WESTPAC project “Regional Study of Marine Endangered Species (Mammals and Sea Turtles) in the Tropical Asia for Effective Conservation (MESTA)” and the Principal Researcher and Coordinator of the project in Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
Holding the post of an Associate Professor at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Dr. Saifullah teaches Biology of Marine Vertebrate at the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment (FSME), UMT and Conservation of Marine Endangered Species for the EC-funded Erasmus Mundus Masters (M.Sc) Course in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems. He had supervised 12 postgraduate students and is currently supervising 6 M.Sc students.
