BIO
Dr. Nazli Aziz is an associate professor of Policy Studies at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). He is currently the Coordinator at the Centre for Ocean Governance, Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS-COG), UMT. He joined UMT as a lecturer (DS45) in November 2006. He obtained his BA (Hons.) and MA (Southeast Asian Studies) from the University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia, and an MA in Political Science from Leiden University, the Netherlands. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer after obtaining his PhD in Political Studies from The University of Auckland (UoA), New Zealand in 2013.
Reflecting his current designation as the Coordinator at INOS-COG and UMT niche, his current research interests focus on coastal development policy and ocean governance, particularly in promoting and establishing Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in Malaysia. The focus of his research lies in the fundamental aspects and development structure of governance mechanisms and policies at the state and federal levels, related to maritime and coastal development. To date, he has received 23 research grants (2 international research grants and 22 national research grants) and 3 consultation grants, totaling RM 2,970,890.29, with RM 777,775.00 allocated to him as the project leader.
In the past few years, his publications have focused on the emerging trend in Malaysia of “bridging” the science and technology with the social science nexus, particularly in “translating” marine data into action plans/strategies for government agencies. He has also been invited as a speaker at seminars/conferences and has served as a member of several technical working committees (TWC) to share his expertise at the university, national, and international levels.
