MARE Project

MARE stands for Marine Coastal and Delta Sustainability for Southeast Asia and is co-funded by the Erasmus+ program of the Europe Union (EU). The aim of the project is to promote sustainable governance & management of coastal, delta & marine (CDM) socio-ecological systems in Malaysian and Vietnamese and adjacent waters through ICT-enhanced tertiary education linked to labour markets & wider stakeholder circles.

There are 13 participating institutions in this project with 4 institutions each from Malaysia and Vietnam, while the remaining are from the EU.

The project plans to achieve its aim by enhancing the current programs being offered at participating institutions, creating a shared open educational platform for the PIs, engaging the various stakeholders in course improvement and to provide opportunities for collaboration between the participating institutions and beyond.

In relations to the students, the project aims to equip students with CDM domain skills and training in addition to their own discipline that will be applicable for their future workplace. The focus will be on engineering and science students, both in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The teaching faculty, on the other hand, will receive re-training in their academic fields and ICT, which will help the development of their teaching portfolio and create greater impact for their research.

The ICT support staff will also receive professional development opportunities by way of (re-)training, and working experience in mainstream and the latest ICT developments (classroom equipment, e-learning & e-science management).

The project is coordinated by University of Bremen and is to be carried out in stages with target completion in year 2022.   For UMT, Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) and Faculty of Science and Marine Environment (FSSM) will be the leading centres to deliver the work packages outlined during the MARE project Kick-off Meeting from 18 – 20 February 2020 in University of Bremen, Germany. UMT was represented by Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Akhir (INOS) and Dr Hing Lee Siang (FSME). If you would like to know more about the project, you may contact members of the UMT MARE project team.
