BIO
Dr. Izwandy is a researcher whose interest has always been at benthic organisms in the marine ecosystem. Three out of four academic qualifications awarded are based on research on invertebrates that live at the bottom of the sea. His undergraduate final year research project focused on the coral reef gastropods, Master of Science (research mode) was on the culture viability of slipper oyster (bivalve), and his doctoral dissertation focused on the commercially used marine worms from the phylum Annelida in Peninsular Malaysia. Hence, it is not surprising that his research expertise and interest are in invertebrate diversity and ecology.
Nevertheless, a research interest without a proper direction is futile. Almost all of Dr. Izwandy’s research focuses on the invertebrate species that have proven or potential ecosystem services to humans as a source of protein, fishing, industries, or health. These related services will build up interest among the public in the importance of biodiversity and its opportunity for wealth creation. He is also beginning to involve ocean governance (marine spatial planning), and environmental communication research to ensure that inputs from the marine biology perspective are well accepted and implemented by policymakers and the public.
Dr. Izwandy has published 36 scientific articles in indexed journals (WoS and Scopus), six chapters in book, three articles in peer-reviewed journals, 20 conference abstracts, three technical and consultancy reports, and 11 intellectual properties (patent, copyrights, and trademark). He has been the principal investigator in four research grants (two completed) and 16 grants as a co-researcher, with the total fund received being RM1.34 million. In addition, he has been awarded 28 awards ranging from innovation awards (special awards, gold, silver, and bronze medals) and travel grants for attending conferences, courses, and expeditions.
