BIO
Dr Aidy @Mohamed Shawal Bin M Muslim is a Professor in Remote Sensing and GIS at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. Excelling in his school studies, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue a degree in the United States of America and obtained a Bachelor of Chemistry degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Upon returning home, he served with the Malaysian Government as a research officer at the Malaysian Center for Remote Sensing (MACRES). During this period, he established various networks with international bodies, especially in advancing space technology. In 2001, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue an MPhil degree at the University of Southampton, UK. With the recommendation from his advisory committee, the MPhil study was converted to a Ph.D. after six months, and he graduated in 2004 in the field of remote sensing and GIS. Upon his return home, he held various posts within his organization, focusing on the application of remote sensing technology in various domains.
Dr. Aidy joined the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), UMT in 2008. At the institute, his research focuses on the application of remote sensing, GIS, and related technologies in various sectors such as national resources, environmental and disaster management, and strategic planning. In recognition of his numerous contributions, Dr. Aidy was appointed as the Deputy Director (Research and Services) from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he assumed the role of Director of the Institute until his term ended in August 2019. Currently, he is heading the Remote Sensing and Marine Informatics research group.
Dr. Aidy has established himself internationally, particularly within the International Oceanographic Commission under UNESCO, due to his expertise. Since 2015, he has served as the Co-Chair of the OceanTeacher Global Academy under IODE, IOC, UNESCO. The academy consists of nine international research institutes worldwide. He is also a member of various international steering groups, including the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), IOC Quality Management Framework, and WESTPAC Ocean Remote Sensing. Over the years, he has been invited to share his expertise around the world, including at esteemed institutions such as the United Nations in New York, UNESCO in Paris, and in other regions. Recognizing his contributions and expertise, IODE nominated him as their representative in the IOC Group of Experts on Capacity Development (IOC GE-CD)-UNESCO to contribute to the planning of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
Despite holding an administrative post, Dr. Aidy is actively involved in various research endeavors. Over the years, he has successfully secured research funding totaling over 5 million ringgits from 15 projects as a main and co-researcher. The research funding has been obtained from both international and national organizations. The research projects encompass a wide range of topics, including data management and the establishment of the Malaysian Ocean Data Centre, sea-level rise modeling, coral habitat mapping, and the application of GIS in socioeconomic studies. Dr. Aidy specializes in the development and application of various image processing techniques, such as sub-pixel analysis, ensemble classifiers, object-based classification, and classification tree analysis, with a focus on improving accuracy. Currently, his research is centered on multispectral sensor and UAV technology, exploring how to adapt these technologies for mapping coral habitats and the coastal zone.
