BIO
Prof. Dr. Wan Izatul Asma Wan Talaat, born in Alor Setar, Kedah, is a law professor at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu as well as a qualified Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. Her current and past research projects are mainly in coastal and marine environmental governance. She has to date secured 40 research grants amounting to approximately MYR7 million, where she acted as principal investigator in 25 of such projects, and published more than 200 research papers including academic books. Her works in environmental governance involving the interface between science and policy through translation of scientific findings into actionable plans and strategies by policy makers and implementers.
Dr. Wan Izatul Asma currently leads the Centre for Ocean Governance (COG) at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), the national Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in marine science. She also holds the position of Visiting Fellow at the Royal Malaysian Navy Sea Power Centre. Since 2014, she has been appointed to the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, specializing in the Ocean, Coastal, and Coral Reefs Specialist Group, as well as the Water and Wetlands Specialist Group. She is also a member of the Environmental Law Network International (ELNI).
In 2014, Dr. Wan Izatul Asma was nominated by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received a travel grant from the UN to represent Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region, speaking at the 15th Meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and Law of the Sea (UNICPOLOS) at the UN Headquarters in New York. Currently, she represents Malaysia, having been nominated by the Ministry of Environment and Water, at the COBSEA Expert Meeting under UNEP.
