What is INOSurf?

INOSurf is a high-performance computing (HPC) system owned by the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). INOSurf is the first HPC in UMT to process data and perform complex calculations at a higher speed. HPC is generally important in science, engineering, technology, and business operations that support comprehensive research and advanced problem-solving through modelling, simulation, analysis, and concurrent uses of computing resources. The development of INOSurf is truly timely with the Malaysian Cohort project and the numerous multi-omics projects being conducted in INOS.  

Specifications

INOSurf is a Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 supercomputer, a massively parallel architecture operated by the OpenHPC cluster manager and the SLURM job scheduler. Its operating system is CentOS 7.6. INOSurf consists of 1 head node and 4 compute nodes that are connected via a high-speed network. Each node comprises of two Intel Xeon Gold 6248 20-core 2.50GHz CPUs for a total of 40 cores per node, providing a total of 200 cores for the entire system. Moreover, INOSurf is equipped with more than 1.8 terabytes of DDR4-2933 memory and 224 terabytes of storage system.

What INOSurf do?

INOSurf is currently used to make ocean forecasts in Malaysian waters, running highly complex numerical ocean models that require a huge amount of computational power. These models and forecast can act as early warning systems for the extreme events that are usually triggered by cold surge, storm surge and tropical cyclone. This is especially important for optimum operations in the marine environment, such as marine surveillance, navigation, search and rescue, recreational and scientific operations.

In addition, INOSurf is also supporting the second phase of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling (SEACLID)/CORDEX Southeast Asia Project, an international Southeast Asia regional climate change scientific initiative in contributing a number of very high resolution dynamical downscaling simulations of the General Circulation Models (GCMs) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5).

Despite the mentioned usage, INOSurf also aimed to provide computing support to researches and students within INOS and UMT, the Malaysian research community and industry.

INOSurf is supported by the Southeast Asian Regional Global Ocean Observing System (SEAGOOS) Pilot Projects under the auspices of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (IOC/WESTPAC) and the International Collaboration Fund (ICF) provided by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia.
